Dissolution, the new album from DC-based musician Carni Klirs, is an experiment in sound and texture. Recorded deep in the throes of pandemic winter, Klirs’ collection of 10 lilting guitar-and-loop driven compositions is a little more active than your traditional drone or ambient album. It invites listeners to drift away in a sea of echoes, delay, and feedback that alternate between cascading tones and decaying loops with more traditionally structured songs that weave between an array of moods and colors. It was recorded through a hybrid of analog and digital techniques that showcase Klirs’ sensibilities: ambient drones and post-rock crescendos amid a wall of guitar hiss and shimmering synths.
Above all, though, Dissolution is a journey with a purpose. The cover and track art was constructed by visualizing the actual waveforms of the songs themselves, with each composition built around a sonic palette and corresponding color. Each track is intended to be a guided journey, with the title and color leading you through a sonic soundscape; to be “Suspended” in the sound, or to be “Subsumed” in the music.
