about

“Prairie Heterotopia” is the second release from Eolomea, a project featuring André Foisy (Locrian) and David Reed (Envenomist/Luasa Raelon).

“Prairie Heterotopia” consists of synthesizers, violin, and minimally processed field recordings taken on All Soul’s Night/November 2nd, 2015 in Chicago’s Palmisano Park.

Palmisano Park is perhaps the most serene and tranquil location in the city of Chicago. Situated in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the city’s southwest side, Palmisano Park has served many different purposes. Approximately 200 million years ago, the site was a coral reef. In the last few hundred years, the site initially functioned as a limestone quarry and later became a landfill. In the last few years, Chicagoans have reconstructed the site as a native prairie, an attempt to return the site to the original landscape of the area, although without any of the inherent biodiversity which is typically found in truly wild spaces. Palmisano Park is an attempt to return part of Chicago to its primordial oneness.

“Prairie Heterotopia” embodies a space locatable in place and time and outside of place and time.

Foisy’s contribution to the piece takes inspiration from Luc Ferrari’s Presque Rien or ‘Almost Nothing’ (minimally processed) approach to field recording practice as well as Tony Conrad’s idea of ‘Eternal Music,’ or slowly changing sustained tones.

Reed’s contribution of mechanical, hypnagogic synthesizers transport the track into a dreamlike state. Reed’s synthesizers perform with the organic recordings and make it nearly impossible to differentiate the synthetic from the many layers of the organic: the biophonic (animal or insect sounds), anthrophonic (man-made sounds), and geophonic (Earth-related sounds like wind). Reed’s contribution provides a sense of otherness.

“Prairie Heterotopia” is both meditative and disruptive, tranquil and unsettling.

André Foisy presented an earlier version of the track as part of the Experimental Sound Studio’s (Chicago) Oscillations series, a series exploring exploration in an artist’s chosen idiom at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studios.
